Fit Five: Sara

Today’s Fit Five Friday features Sara from Maine. Let’s see what she has to say about health, fitness, and her body.

1. What do you love about your body?

I love my lower legs…everything from the knee down, including my feet and toes.

2. What would you like to change about your body?

I would happily change the following features of my body: I would love to have a flatter belly, to no longer have anything sagging or hanging. I would also love to have perkier boobs. I have always had saggy old lady boobs. Someday I will likely get a little lift, at least that is my plan.

3. Have you ever been or are you currently on a diet?

I did do the Kashi GoLean eating plan for about 6 months sometime around the year 2000. I replaced one meal with Kashi cereal or GoLean bar or a shake. I was in a pretty decent workout phase at the time as well, and I did end up losing 10 or so pounds. I am currently eating according to the Weight Watchers plan guidelines. I don’t think of it as a diet, rather a modified, improved, appropriate way of eating. It has been a really positive experience for me, but not without struggle. Initially I was able to shed 30 pounds in the first 5 or so months on the plan, but have been at a bit of a plateau for the last few months. I have managed to shed another 10 pounds, but have been ping-ponging on the scale. Ironically, I have been told that I have gotten ‘skinny’ in the last few months… since hitting my plateau. I have been told by my personal trainer that my body is just recalibrating and that I shouldn’t get caught up in the numbers.

4. Have you ever or do you currently belong to a gym?

Yes, I belong to a gym and have been a member for over 2 years. I resumed working out regularly (this time around) 3 months after the birth of my first son. I regularly did spin, zumba and aerobics classes. I got pregnant 9 months later and continued to workout until the day before I went in for my scheduled c-section. After the birth of my second son, I began walking a week or so after, and was jogging around the track at the gym just a few weeks after that. The day my son was eligible to be enrolled in daycare at the gym, I began to once again attend my favorite classes. In addition to spinning, and aerobics classes, I have added in work with the TRX suspension system, kettle bells, and practice yoga daily. I spend between 6-9 hours per week working out… hard. I have made working out my job. I am addicted to the power it gives me, to be in control of sculpting and shaping my body. I am addicted to this time I have to devote to MYSELF. I am addicted to feeling the sense of accomplishment I feel after accomplishing the crazy workouts that I do.

5. What does fitness mean to you?

Fitness, for me, is defined by feeling good in my body. it’s about feeling strong, it’s about having good posture and eating good foods that fuel my body and foods that make me happy. It’s about overall wellness.
