Trick or Treat?

Happy Halloween! It’s my favorite day of the year. I’ve got my black and orange striped tights on, and I’m looking forward to the many treats that my coworkers will be bringing to the office today.

Here’s a little lesson that’s perfect for this spookiest of holidays, and one that I hope you will remember all year: Don’t think of food as “good” or “bad.” Labeling food like this can lead to disordered eating, and an obsession with what goes in your mouth. That’s no way to live, and no way to listen to what your body needs or might be craving.

Most of the time, I eat wholesome, nutritious food, that’s true. But I also like cupcakes and Oreos fashioned into eyeballs and mini Snickers bars. When I do have these kinds of foods, I sure don’t think of it as “cheating.” Instead, I think of it as a treat.

A treat is defined as “an event or item that is out of the ordinary and gives great pleasure.” Sound pretty delicious to me.

It’s a perfect day to wipe “cheat” from your eating vocabulary, and replace it with “treat.” Happy Halloween!
