Winter Workouts

I was hoping we wouldn’t have this discussion for a few more weeks, but the time has come. The weather has turned cold and a little blustery. It snowed here yesterday (although it didn’t stick). So this turn in the weather begs the question: How do your workouts change when the weather does?

I do a lot of walking outside when the weather is nice, but here in upstate New York, there are many months where the weather doesn’t cooperate. I normally take my workouts exclusively indoors. I spend a lot of time on my elliptical, throw around my kettlebells, and sweat along to the many workout DVDs in my collection.

This year, however, I’m going to try something new: Walking in the winter. I’m typically a very cold person, but I tend to heat up very quickly when I work out, so layers are going to be key. I’m also afraid of slipping and falling on the snow and ice that are an inevitable part of an upstate New York winter, so I recently purchased a pair of Yaktrax.

Yaktrax are these nifty things that you slip on over your running or walking shoes. They provide greater stability, so you can walk naturally on snow and ice. I bought a glow-in-the-dark pair, both because they’ll make me more visible, and because I love things that glow in the dark.

What are your workout plans for the winter months? How do you stay motivated to keep up your fitness routine when it’s cold and dark, and it would be so easy just to snuggle up on the couch with a blanket and a good book? Tell me in the comments!
