Online Dating

Are you happily married, or in a relationship? Good for you – stay there. Because dating is hard. I’ve been single for a few years now, and I can’t seem to figure out how to meet anyone. Most people go the online dating route these days. I’ve tried – and am currently trying again. But here’s the thing: none of their “body type” categories define me.

Here are the options I can choose from on Match.com:

  • No Answer
  • Slender
  • Big and beautiful
  • Curvy
  • About Average
  • Athletic and toned
  • Full-figured
  • Heavyset
  • A few extra pounds
  • Stocky

Here are the options I can choose for my potential date (male):

  • Slender
  • About Average
  • Athletic and toned
  • Heavyset
  • A few extra pounds
  • Stocky

(I’m not sure those are totally accurate – although they are the options I see when I edit my profile. Still, it seems kind of odd that a woman could choose “stocky” or a man choose “slender.” Hmm.)

What if I’m, say, curvy and athletic, but not toned? It won’t let me choose more than one option, and athletic is paired with toned, so I can’t just be half of that. Also, I wonder what the difference is between stocky and heavyset. Should there be some pound ranges here or something? These categories seem completely arbitrary. It’s hard enough putting yourself out there in the world of online dating. To also have to define yourself by a narrow and possible inaccurate label just adds to the stress.

Here’s hoping some smart, handsome, funny, kind guy looks past the label and sees me for the awesome woman I am. In the meantime, do you want to set me up with anyone?
