Fit Five: Christine

Today’s Fit Five Friday features Christine from New York. Let’s see what she has to say about health, fitness, and her body.

1. What do you love about your body?

My legs. I was fortunate to inherit very shapely and strong legs from my mother. Even when I am heavier than I want to be, my calves and ankles look good. And my breasts.

2. What would you like to change about your body?

Actually, other than my ever increasing weight, I’m pretty happy with my body. It is proportional and I carry my weight (up to a certain point) very well. Most people do not think I weigh as much as I do. I guess if I could request one thing, it would be to take the weight off the middle of my body and make healthier food and exercise choices.

3. Have you ever been or are you currently on a diet?

I have been on diets but not right now. I used to be able to lose weight within a few days by eating more sensibly; however, I find it more and more difficult to lose weight that it is very easy for me to gain! Living alone makes it harder to stick to a diet; plus, I am an emotional eater and sometimes I just can’t stop myself. I have tried Weight Watchers at least three times. I have lost and gained the same 4 pounds over and over again. One time I lost 24 pounds, but I got tired of tracking everything. I also sometimes feel like, “Who cares?” And it is easy for me to tell myself, “Nobody!” So I eat whatever I want and don’t get enough physical activity and gain weight back. Most of it goes to my abdomen and hips, especially since I had a hysterectomy in 2003.

4. Have you ever or do you currently belong to a gym?

I do not belong to a gym. I have in the past and have not used the memberships to my best advantage. I am very self-conscious when I work out in a gym where I know no one and/or there is no one to advise correct usage of machines or technique. I used to take classes with my friend or taught by another friend, but since I moved here from IL, I have not taken but a few one time visit type classes. I would like to join somewhere again, but at 62, I don’t qualify for the reduced pricing for seniors at the Y. I have always found it difficult to budget for a gym membership. I do take a weekly yoga class and sometimes walk a mile or more several times a week.

5. What does fitness mean to you?

Being able to keep my body strong and flexible, and to have the stamina to exercise without being totally out of breath and/or in pain. Also, able to perform tasks around my home without needing assistance from others. And the wisdom to make wise food choices and eat smaller portions!

Bonus: What is your current fitness goal?

I would like to find the motivation to do my yoga practice daily at home and schedule my walks consistently…and frequently…to build endurance, balance, surefootedness, and more self=-esteem and confidence.  I would also like to educate myself more about healthy nutrition and commit to eating the most healthy and balanced diet for me.
