It’s the end of 2012, so let’s make some resolutions for the new year! I’m sure you’ve already started to see the endless advertisements for diets and exercise routines that will help you be a better person (that’s code for “get skinny”) in 2013. I don’t know what percentage of people resolve to lose weight in the new year, but I’m guessing it’s pretty high. Before you make a simliar resolution, try these BFD-ish resolutions instead:
- Resolve to nourish and move your body. But don’t punish yourself if you don’t. To use one of my favorite expressions, life is a marathon, not a sprint. No good comes from thinking of food in terms of good or bad. And certainly nothing positive comes from treating yourself like a failure or a disappointment if you spend an evening on the couch instead of on the treadmill, or have an extra slice of pizza. Treat your body well, but remember how important it is to enjoy yourself, too.
- Resolve to talk to yourself the way you would talk to your best friend. You wouldn’t tell your best friend she was worthless, ugly, or disgusting because of what her body looks like, so don’t talk to yourself like that. Positive change comes from positive energy, not negative talk or shame.
- Resolve to make both food and movement a source of joy in your life, not punishment. Learn to make some healthy recipes that are also delicious, so that you look forward to eating. Find a form of movement that you truly enjoy, and look forward to.
- Resolve to love your body, just as it is today. Don’t wait until you’ve lost a certain number of pounds or inches, or until you can fit back into your skinny pants. Instead, think of all the amazing things your body does for you every day. Embrace it, respect it, and love it.
At this very moment, on this last day of 2012, you are good enough just as you are. You will not magically become a better person, more lovable, smarter, or more worthy if you lose weight. At this very moment, people love you and are glad you are in this world, just as you are. I’m one of them!

Happy New Year, friends!
