W.E.W. Volume 7

Here’s some stuff in the news this week!

First up, check out this thin woman who can eat an unbelievable amount of food. If this doesn’t teach us something about how bodies process food differently, I don’t know what does. Unless she’s working out 8 hours a day, I think we can agree that the whole calories in/calories out myth is busted.

skinnyLittle lady, giant steak.

Next up, here is a great (not great) article about how if we just start massively taxing sugar and salt, people will not be obese any more. Um, right… because all fat people sit around mowing on cakes and chips all day, while thin people nibble on carrot sticks and apples. Yay, stereotyping!

fatthinFat people to the left; skinny people to the right.

In the world of retail, Target apparently forgot that there are actual fat people in the world who could model plus-size clothes. Instead, they put a thin pregnant woman in a dress and called it good enough. Of course they later said it was a mistake, but whatevs. This reminds me of how often maternity clothes are so much more stylish and fashionable than plus-size clothes. Because being pregnant is a good thing and you are allowed to look good while you’re carrying a baby, but if you’re fat, you’re lazy and weak and therefore you should wear ill-fitting, ugly outfits. When, oh when, will companies realize how many fat women out there would give them tons of money for great-looking duds?

targetWow, she is very specifically fat!

This one is my favorite. A website called Fit Bottomed Girls published an article a few years ago – that is making the rounds again here at the beginning of the year – on how to permanently lose weight. Permanently, people! As in FOREVER. I don’t know how this isn’t international news! I mean, they’ve solved the greatest threat to humanity as we know it: fat. Give these women the Nobel Peach Prize, STAT! Oh, wait, it’s just a bunch of tips for living healthier, like drinking water, being active, and cooking at home? Gosh, I must just be a giant failure, because I do almost all of these things and I haven’t lost weight permanently. Dang it! Guess I’ll try again next January.

Next up is a great quote from the book Read My Hips: How I Learned to Love My Body, Ditch Dieting, and Live Large by Kim Brittingham:

Every weight loss program, no matter how positively it’s packaged, whispers to you that you’re not right. You’re not good enough. You’re unacceptable and you need to be fixed. I officially reject that message. I reject it for myself, and I reject it on your behalf, too.

I reject it too, Kim!

Finally, here’s some inspiration for your Facebook timeline, your Pinterest board, your fridge, or your cubical wall. Print, pin, share! Then hit the comments to tell me what you think about today’s news round-up, and what caught your eye this week.
