Fit Five: Johanna

Today’s Fit Five Friday features Johanna from New York. Let’s see what she has to say about health, fitness, and her body.

1. What do you love about your body?

I think my favorite thing about my body is the gigantic scar on my left knee, the outcome of surgery from a torn ACL when I was 15. It could have been a setback, but instead made me work hard to become a stronger person, physically and mentally.

2. What would you like to change about your body?

It might be petty, but I’d really love to tone my arms; the underarm fat has become too pendulum-esque for my liking.

3. Have you ever been or are you currently on a diet?

I have never dieted traditionally, as I’ve been a pretty active person my entire life, and my mom never put an emphasis on looks (and instilled pretty healthy eating habits from an early age.) However, two years ago she and I did give up carbs for two weeks, prior to going on our annual vacation. We did lose a handful of pounds, but it was a miserable experience.

4. Have you ever or do you currently belong to a gym?

I belonged to Planet Fitness for over a year, a few years back. I joined that gym specifically because I didn’t know anyone who went there. I don’t really enjoy sweating in front of a crowd, which is what ultimately caused me to cancel my membership.

5. What does fitness mean to you?

I think fitness is about being healthy – not about how you look. You can be a size two, skinny in the eyes of the world, but if you get winded walking up a flight of stairs, you’re not healthy or fit.

Bonus: What is your current fitness goal?

To exercise regularly; I’m supremely bad about that, for no good reason, and it shows.
