Twinkie Tragedy

I’m sure you’re heard the news that we may no longer have Twinkies in our lives (thanks to Zombieland for predicting this tragedy). I distinctly remember the first time I had a Twinkie: Sitting on a bus waiting to go to New York City for the first time, my best friend and I shared a three-pack. I was sixteen years old.

(That’s right, despite the fact that I was a fat kid, I didn’t taste a Twinkie until I was a sophomore in high school. My sister and I grew up eating Cheerios and skim milk, and we were still fat. Genetics, anyone?)

The potential demise of the Twinkie makes me think about “bad” foods. I would love it if we as a society could stop applying morality to food. Food isn’t good or bad. It might be less nutritious, more delicious, more likely to cause bad gas pains, or less likely to fill you up. But calling a food bad makes you feel like you are being a bad person by consuming it, when the truth is maybe you really just wanted something deep-dried and filled with vanilla cream.

What foods do you love but rarely eat? One of my biggest treat foods is ramen noodles. Yep, those starchy, salty noodles you survived on in college because you couldn’t afford real food. Every once in awhile, I’ll treat myself to a package of ramen noodles. I’m usually good for six or nine months after that.

Tell me about your favorite treat – not cheat! – foods in the comments. Are you in Twinkie mourning?
